Defining Characteristics Of Dystopian Literature - 755 Words

The Declaration – Text Response Questions Two Defining Characteristics of Dystopian Literature A characteristic that defines ‘The Declaration’ as a dystopian literature is the extremely controlling government, or ‘Authorities’. The Authorities control; the birth rates (next to none), the Longevity drug distribution, what the ‘Legal’ citizens believe about the Surpluses, what the Surpluses believe about themselves, the catchers, and even what the Surpluses eat for breakfast plus much more. Another defining characteristic is that free thinking and independent thoughts are banned (especially for the Surpluses), partially because of the controlling Authorities. The Authorities ‘brain wash’ the ‘Legals’ and Surpluses into believing what they want them to believe. This new belief system becomes the new accepted way of living. Suspicions of the morality of this way of living are so few and far between that the Authorities rarely have to deal with this problem. The small group of revolutionary ‘Rebels’ called the Underground are the only hitch in the Authorities plan, and the Authorities keep a close watch on the known members, especially their leader ‘Barney’ (pg ___). The Underground choose to have children in secret without ‘Opting Out’ and going off Longevity. I think that the right thing to do in this situation would be to ‘Opt Out’, have children and protest from there because although I donâ €™t agree with the ‘Surplus’ idea, the Authorities concern of over population isShow MoreRelatedCommentary on the Satiric Nature of George Orwells 19841926 Words   |  8 Pagesevery work in literature is unique. How To Quote Shakespeare In An Essay Example For Students

How To Quote Shakespeare In An Essay Although generally considered the greatest dramatist of all time, William Shakespeare’s life remains shrouded in mystery. Born in 1564 in the town of Stratford-on-Avon to a middle-class family, he is presumed to have received a grammar school education. However, by the time he was thirteen or fourteen, his family had become impoverished and he was forced to drop out of school in order to work full-time in his father’s tannery. At the age of eighteen, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway, a woman eight years his senior and already pregnant with their first child. Within three years, she bore him two more children–twins. Apparently, the marriage was not a happy one, and it is believed that shortly after the birth of the twins, he deserted his family and disappeared. There are no more records of Shakespeare’s existence until 1592 when he suddenly appears in London, already successful enough to excite the wrath of the university man Robert Greene who calls him an â€Å"upstart crow†. By 1594, he had joined the Lord Chamberlain’s company which included the great tragic actor Richard Burbage and the accomplished comedian Will Kempe. Between 1594 and the time of his death, there are little more than fifty references to Shakespeare. Twenty seven of these references involve lawsuits or business matters. Occasionally, he is mentioned as an actor in a play. And there are three references to his owning a share in the profits of the Globe and Blackfriars Theatres. After 1613, William Shakespeare wrote no more. According to several sources, he retired to a large house in Stratford-on-Avon and planted mulberry trees. Legend has it that he contracted a fever after a night of heavy drinking with Ben Jonson. He died on April 23, 1616. Only about half of Shakespeare’s plays had been published at the time of his death, and if not for two of his colleagues, John Heminge and Henry Condell, we would have only half of the Shakespearean Canon. Fortunately, the two actors gathered together all of The Bard’s manuscripts shortly after his death and printed them in the First Folio edition.

Analysis of the Text “the Time-Sweepers” by Ursula Wills-Jones free essay sample

â€Å"The Time-Sweepers† By Ursula Wills-Jones The following short story is about time-sweepers and lost time. They are people who sweep up all the time that is lost or wasted. They are invisible, but sometimes they can be noticed. They carry a broom, a mop and a big dustpun. The time-sweepers are hard-working. They work every day and are never sick. The lost and wasted time is packed and recycled. But not every type of time can be recycled, the most poisoned time is buried in a tank underneath a disused army base. The rest of the time can be sold to the people who need it or distributed to good causes or emergency situations. The full text is built on the conflict between people who waste time and people who sweep up all the time that is lost and wasted. Ursula Wills-Jones idealizes the time-sweepers and ridicules people. The author uses the stylistic device of climax in order to describe different types of time wasting: the man who has waited so long to propose to his girlfriend; the woman who has spent thirty-five loathed years in an estate agents, dreaming of opening a florists. We will write a custom essay sample on Analysis of the Text â€Å"the Time-Sweepers† by Ursula Wills-Jones or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The author refers to the stylistic device of hyperbole in order to laugh at the people who waste time: the time-sweeper will pass straight by the desk of the woman who is reading a holiday catalogue under the desk, poring over photos of tropical beaches. They will pass by the next desk, where a man is enjoyably wondering what his mother-in-law looks like naked, and stop by the desk of the young man who is counting every minute, and loathing the hours. The author creates a constant presence of time sweepers. The reader feels that they are everywhere: in the railway station, in the office, at your desk. The time-sweepers are hard-working; they don’t like to rest because there is so mush wasted time after holidays: it takes them around three weeks to resume normal service†¦

Location and Function of the Pons in the Human Brain

Location and Function of the Pons in the Human Brain In Latin, the word pons literally means bridge. The pons is a portion of the hindbrain that connects the cerebral cortex with the medulla oblongata. It also serves as a communications and coordination center between the two hemispheres of the brain. As a part of the brainstem, the pons helps in the transferring of nervous system messages between various parts of the brain and the spinal cord. Function The pons is involved in several functions of the body including: ArousalAutonomic function: breathing regulationRelaying sensory information between the cerebrum and cerebellumSleep Several cranial nerves originate in the pons. The largest cranial nerve, the trigeminal nerve aids in facial sensation and chewing. The abducens nerve assists in eye movement. The facial nerve enables facial movement and expressions. It also aids in our sense of taste and swallowing. The vestibulocochlear nerve aids in hearing and helps us maintain our equilibrium. The pons  helps to regulate the respiratory system by assisting the medulla oblongata in controlling breathing rate. The pons is also involved in the control of sleep cycles and the regulation of deep sleep. The pons activates inhibitory centers in the medulla in order to inhibit movement during sleep. Another primary function of the pons is to connect the forebrain with the hindbrain. It connects the cerebrum to the cerebellum through the cerebral peduncle. The cerebral peduncle is the anterior portion of the midbrain that consists of large nerve tracts. The pons relays sensory information between the cerebrum and cerebellum. Functions under the control of the cerebellum include  fine motor coordination and control, balance, equilibrium, muscle tone, fine motor coordination, and a sense of body position. Location Directionally, the pons is superior to the medulla oblongata and inferior to the midbrain. Sagittally, it is anterior to the cerebellum and posterior to the pituitary gland. The fourth ventricle runs posteriorly to the pons and medulla in the brainstem. Pons Injury Damage to the pons can result in serious problems as this brain area is important for connecting areas of the brain that control autonomic functions and movement. Injury to the pons may result in sleep disturbances, sensory problems, arousal dysfunction and coma. Locked-in syndrome is a condition resulting from damage to nerve pathways in the pons that connect the cerebrum, spinal cord, and cerebellum. The damage disrupts voluntary muscle control leading to quadriplegia and the inability to speak. Individuals with locked-in syndrome are consciously aware of what is going on around them but are unable to move any parts of their bodies except for their eyes and eyelids. They communicate by blinking or moving their eyes. Locked-in syndrome is most commonly caused by decreased blood flow to the pons or bleeding in the pons. These symptoms are often the result of blood clot or stroke. Damage to the myelin sheath of nerve cells in the pons results in a condition called central pontine myelinolysis. The myelin sheath is an insulating layer of lipids and proteins that help neurons conduct nerve impulses more efficiently. Central pontine myelinolysis can result in difficulty swallowing and speaking, as well as paralysis. A blockage of the arteries that supply blood to the pons can cause a type of stroke known as lacunar stroke. This type of stroke occurs deep within the brain and typically only involves a small portion of the brain.  Individuals suffering from a lacunar stroke may experience numbness, paralysis, loss of memory,  difficulty in speaking or walking, coma, or death. Divisions of the Brain Forebrain: encompasses the cerebral cortex and brain lobes.Midbrain: connects the forebrain to the hindbrain.Hindbrain: regulates autonomic functions and coordinates movement.
